The pharmacy at Grace Cottage Hospital works collaboratively with the medical and nursing staff to make sure that the patient receives the needed medication in the appropriate dose. After a doctor orders medications for a patient the pharmacist checks for patient allergies to medications as well as the prescribed medications' interactions with other drugs that the patient may be taking. The pharmacist also checks a patient's lab results for correct dosing. All orders for medications are recorded in the hospitals computer system. The hospitals computer system then sends information to the automated medication dispensing system creating a medication profile in the automated dispensing machine. The patient's nurse is then able to get the medications from the dispensing machine as the patient needs them. The dispensing machine only opens one drawer at a time allowing for removal of only one medication at a time.
The pharmacy assures all Intravenous preparations for patients who
